3 liters of Shakespeare Stout for my birthday.

My interest in craft beer originated when I was 18. After obtaining a fake ID, I started purchasing quality imports and craft beers from Dominic's Liquor in Fresno, California. By the time I turned 21, I had already sampled over 300 different beers. I didn't get interested in visiting breweries until after I was given my first Army assignment at Ft. Lewis, Washington. On the drive there from Fresno, I stopped at Ft. Bragg, California for the evening. Next to my motel was the nationally renowned North Coast Brewing Company, where I purchased a Cooper's map of breweries in the Pacific Northwest. From there my quest began: I've visited almost every single location in Washington and Oregon, plus scores more all over the US. I've also sampled over 3500 different beers from 47 states and 69 countries.

I studied the beer industry in college at Washington State University-Vancouver for my bachelor's degree and Western Washington Unversity in Bellingham for my master's studies. My main focus of research covers mostly the social history of the beer industry in the Pacific Northwest; however, I have delved into the greater United States and the evolution of the pre-craft period to our current renaissance. So far, I have written several historical and political science articles about the industry, including:

-The Washington Brewers Guild as a Trade Association
-Prohibition in Portland and Oregon

-From Beer Garden to Beer Festival: A Historical Narrative of the Evolution of the American Beer Garden to the Creation of the Craft Beer Festival
-A Guide to Beer Enthusiasm in the Pacific Northwest
-Craft Beer Identity
(Click on any of the above titles to read them)

My favorite styles of beer are stouts, IPAs, rye ales, wheat beers, pilsners, imperial versions of most beers, and any style modified with a high hop content. I also brew!

Here I'm brewing my Belgian-style orange witbier.

I started brewing in April 2003, and it's been an exciting, challenging experience. In August 2003, I submitted my second and third batches of beer (a pale ale and IPA, respectively) to the Clark County Fair, and I received blue ribbons for both. The IPA scored 41 points and the pale ale was top in its class, scoring a 40. The next year, I submitted a Belgian-style orange witbier and, as a joke because the fermentation went horribly wrong, I submitted a new IPA. I was shooting for Best of Show and the worst beer at the same time, but I only half-succeeded. The witbier got Best of Show, scoring 44.33, and the IPA took home a white ribbon with a score of 24.66.

Currently, I am on a homewbrewing hiatus in order for me to focus more of my energies on historical research of the Pacific Northwest beer industry, and frankly, because of the increased cost of brewing supplies. I hope to get back to the swing of things and once again start making the libation that very well defines me as an individual. Cheers!
